Caffeinated Randomness - Mommy You Need To Get One of Those!

Hi, I'm Michelle and I'm here to tell you about all the products my children think I need in my house. You can't live with these products. If you don't have these products you won't be able to clean your house quickly, cook an egg without it's shell and melt a snowman with only a few cans of spray.
Ok, I'm not going to tell you about those products but if you watch late night or cable tv, you can tell what I am talking about - infomercials. They are worse than commercials lately, because my kids see them and the explanation of how they can make "my" life better and my kids automatically think I need the product. Not that I haven't bought products from tv or from an "As Seen On TV Store." Some have been good and some not so good.

Can you see what worked - the cleaning products. The only complaint I had about my steam mop is that it died after 1 year. That could because I was using it 2x a week. I loved my mop and mourned it's loss. I really do use my Sham Wow cloths all the time. They do what they say. I have been able to get out so much liquid spilt onto the carpet that we have very little stains because of split coffee (Sam did this Sunday. I don't know what upset me more the actual spill or the fact that I missed my coffee.). My rubber broom is amazing. I love how it picks up hair and dust and works on all surfaces inside and outside the house. My old hair dresser used them in his salon as it is great for picking up those little hairs.
Nads worked ok. I just don't like the fact that you still needed the cloths. I really love my Veet Stripless Wax. I have to admit that a friend and me actually ate the wax. They said you could on the infomercial. It was like Kiwi Honey. Maybe that's what they should have tried to sell. That would have sold millions as well. My ab rocker was fun to use but I don't think it actually worked to lose weight. It was a great seat to watch tv on though.
I think of the all the infomercials that I love, it is the new one with Vince from ShamWow and Chop It fame. It makes me laugh for numerous reasons when I watch it. I may have to get me a Schticky!

Caffeinated Randomness - The Actor's Studio Edition

I know I haven't really been on line these last few weeks. I wish I could tell you that I have been doing some personal relflection. I wish I could tell you I'm totally unpacked and organized. I wish I could tell you the kids and I have been out and about doing some great summer activities. But alas no, this has not been the case. I have been in the summer slump. I really can't seem to get the energy to get off the couch and away from the tv. I wish I could tell you that I have been watching inspirational shows or Beth Moore videos or Joyce Meyer. Again I have to admit that I have been watching pure unadultered trash tv. I have been watching home make over shows; shows about people loving or listing their homes; cooking competition shows (yes, Hell's Kitchen is back) and shamless reality shows (16 and Pregnant - is there really no abstinence education out there?). I'm hoping I'm not the only summer couch potatoe out there.
I know I've been on the go since last summer. Maybe this is my body on strike telling me that I need to rest. However, I know that I have not been resting in the place I should. I haven't really been resting in His arms, but in the world's arms. I need to start prioritizing my life the way He calls me to: JOY - Jesus first, Others second, You/Me last (I learned this on the Duggars). I need to get off my "duff" and get on my knees in prayer and get my Bible out. I know it's been a while because my life has been reflecting this. I again have been on the speed way without any pit stops and soon I'm gonna hit something and have my world spin out of control. Before that happens I need to stop and reflect.
This all being said and to give some lightheartedness to this deep situation, I thought I would answer the questions that James Lipton gives each guest on the Actor's Studio. I hope that you will play along and share your answers.
1. What is your favorite word?
Grace. I love this word and all it encompasses.
2. What is your least favorite word?
Diet
3. What turns you on?
Chocolate and coffee, especially mixed.
4. What turns you off?
Cigarette smoke smell. I just want to heave when I smell that smell.
5. What sound or noise do you love?
The sound of my kids laughing.
6. What sound or noise do you hate?
Ear piercing screams. It makes me want to pull my hair.
7. What is your favorite curse word?
Admittedly I have two. One is the dreaded 4 letter one which I am trying to stop using and the other is "Oh Mylanta". It comes in handy in all situations and acutally makes people shake their heads when they hear it. In fact, many of my friends now say it too.
8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I have always wanted to be a hairdresser. I love the social and creative aspect of this profession. Plus, like motherhood, you can always be employed somewhere. People always need their hair done.
9. What profession would you not like to do?
Nursing. I have a sister in law and two nieces in nursing. I have heard the horror stories. I dislike blood and really would demand way more than they get paid to change diapers of adults.
10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

The Good, The Bad, The Clean and the Icky!

This weekend I watched two movies. These movies together made me think about the choices I have been making regarding my tv/video viewing. These movies were Letters to Juliet and No Strings Attached. One I can recommend, the other left me reeling. Both these movies are advertised as romantic comedies and aimed at the late teenage/college and career age. But these movies are different as night and day. One relies on the premises of what if and is light. The other relies perverse humour to get the laughs.
I watched No Strings Attached with some friends while I was over at their place for dinner. I was shocked and repulsed at the movie. Within the first 5 minutes there was already language that I wouldn't want my child to hear or see. (I can't believe I said that, I sound like my grandmother). I felt at one point that we were watching soft core porn. It was that vivid. Luckily I had to leave early and didn't watch the rest of the movie. I still feel a bit shocked and dirty. But I was more shocked that this movie was being played in front of a 15 year old with no issues about language or content.
I went home and watched Letters to Juliet and was taken back at the difference of the movies. I knew how both would end. Of course, the main characters would end up together, but in the second movie they didn't have to sleep together to do it. This difference, as well as others, led me to start thinking about what I have been watching lately and are they shows I could watch if my daughter came into the room unexpectedly.
Most of the shows I watch are pretty clean. I watch a lot of food shows, home decorating shows, shows on the history channel. We like to watch Pawn Stars and American Pickers. We enjoy watching Billy the Exterminator as a family and old Mash episodes. There are few shows I watch that I don't want my kids to watch namely Glee and Grey's Anatomy. Both these shows are inappropriate for the kids, but if it's inappropriate for the kids, then why is it ok for me? These are things I've been thinking about lately.
A few weeks ago I fasted from TV for a week. It was a struggle, but I learned that I could do it. That the TV shows didn't need me to continue. I missed one week of my two favourite shows and I didn't die.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8 NIV 84

Do the things that I read and watch regularly reflect these truths? No. Many of the shows and books I read are more "worldly." The focus on what the "world" says is acceptable, rather than what God says is acceptable. They focus on many of the issues of the day, but many look at self rather than God for help. This basic lie that we can rely on ourselves and not God can lead us further from the Father until we don't hear His voice, which is where the enemy wants us.
I will admit that sometimes I read and watch such things to see what all the "hoopla" was about. For example the Da Vinci Code. I hated this book and not because of the premise which was how most of my friends felt about it but because it was a poorly written book. Did I learn anything from this book - NO. But reading it did help me to talk to my non-Christian friends about truths. I am not a believer in banning, but I think we need to discern what we put in ourselves and how it can either educate us or harm us. If what we are watching or reading will lead us away from God then we need to cease and desist immediately. We need to match what we are feeding our hearts and minds with Gods word.
I know this is a struggle that I have. What's appropriate and what's not. I think we all do. But after this weekend I know that if it makes me feel "icky" then it's definitely something that I shouldn't be watching or reading.
