NIGERIA: Most Dangerous Country for Residing Christians

According to the new 2013 edition of the World Watch List, produced by Open Doors, Nigeria is considered the most dangerous country for a Christian to live. The researchers report, "Between November 2011 and October 2012, we recorded 1,201 killings of Christians worldwide of which 791 happened in Nigeria." Since 2009, the attacks of Boko Haram, a militant Islamic group, have claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people. The majority of the attacks were made against churches -- spanning from the capital Abuja, across mid-to-northern Nigeria, and through to Sharia-law northern states.
In the militant group's ruthless attempts to overthrow the government for the purpose of creating an Islamic state, the resulting havoc and destruction has taken its toll in what is known as Africa's most populous country. And the aftermath of the tragedies affecting Nigeria's innocent victims can be described as excruciating. Deborah painfully recalls how her husband was shot dead in front of her, and how their two daughters, ages 7 and 9, were taken away by the perpetrators on April 25th, 2012. This distraught mother has not received any news of her girls since then. A few months after their abduction, her third child (a son) was shot and killed
While many Christian families have been able to flee from these volatile areas, a small minority of remaining residents are now living in constant fear of further unexpected attacks. In an effort to provide some protection, the government has deployed a special army-police unit. However, it's reported that the security is still fragile in this part of the world
- Please continue to pray for the surviving victims of the attacks, May our Heavenly Father assure them of His comforting presence and tremendous love, while also providing them a safe place in which they can heal and be restored.
- Ask that He give the government officials wisdom and support, as they raise up a standard against the tide of evil seeking to overcome them.
- Pray that God will somehow capture the attention of the members of Boko Haram for sincere repentance and spiritual transformation.

BURMA: Military Destroys 66 Churches and Assaults Numerous Women

To date, a total of 66 churches have been burnt down in Kachin state, the result of a conflict that reignited in June of 2011, according to a report provided by the Kachin Women's Association of Thailand. The figures in this report have been confirmed by the Kachin Baptist Convention based in Myitkyina.
Julia Marip, spokesperson for the women's association, believes that the burning of churches by government forces is a matter related to religious persecution. Compounding the seriousness of this situation is the fact that 30 reported incidents of sexual assault, involving 64 women or girls (cases that include gang rapes), have been committed by Myanmar troops. "Half of those women raped were killed afterward," Julia Marip sadly announces.
Ask the Lord to grant these suffering Christians in Burma greatly needed strength and protection. In the midst of these seemingly insurmountable trials and times of chaos, may they be encouraged of His unfailing love, faithfulness and ability to provide divine intervention, healing and restoration. Also pray that He will work mightily in the hearts and minds of the perpetrators, including all those in authority.

Egyptian Businessman and Associates Imprisoned Sources: Middle East Concern
Egyptian Christian businessman Sherif Ramses manages a bookstore in Benghazi, the capital of the Cyrenaica province (in eastern Libya). On February 10th, he was arrested because the inventory of his store included Christian books which he made readily available to Arabic-speaking immigrants who either lived or worked in the city or the surrounding metropolitan area. While he has not yet been charged before a court, it has been reported that Sherif has experienced repeated physical mistreatment while in detainment.
Other believers in Benghazi who had in some way associated with Sherif, whether through business connections or socially, have also been recently arrested. All of these associates were working in the area as language teachers or businessmen. Though formal charges have not been made against any of them to date, they are all accused of proselytizing Christianity.
Pray that God will protect and preserve Sherif and his Christian friends during this difficult time while facing opposition and incarceration, that peace and the presence of Jesus overshadow each of these suffering believers and their families.
Pray for those in authority, including the officials responsible for making these arrests
May God pour out His Holy Spirit on the entire nation of Libya so many will be brought to repentance and faith in Him!

Mali - France Intervenes with Campaign Against Rebels
France has taken decisive action by launching a military campaign against Islamist rebels that aggressively seized control of northern Mali last year. More recently, the militants have been trying to advance further into the south, posing danger to the Christians who were forced to flee to this area. With links to al-Qaeda, the rebels are also imposing a harsh version of sharia law in the territory.
Their attempted progression into southern Mali has sparked alarm. Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced: "Obviously we are very concerned about the situation, and the development of essentially an entire terrorist region is of grave concern to everybody in the international community." French foreign minister Laurent Fabius further explains that had France not intervened, there was a risk that the advance could result in "appalling consequences."
The Islamist takeover of northern Mali has already had a devastating impact on the Church in the region. Christians have been driven from their homes, and all church buildings in Gao and Timbuktu were destroyed. Many of the believers affected by the attacks fled to Bamako, where they have been living in refugee camps. There is added concern that if the militants were to advance further south, these refugees would be left with absolutely no safe haven in their homeland.
Pray for all the Christian refugee families who are in need of food, shelter and medical care. May the Lord also minister His peace and comfort to these displaced believers, many of whom are anxious because they don't know whether some of their family members are alive or dead.
Ask that His protection shield the innocent victims who may, through circumstances, be caught in the crossfire and that there will soon be a positive resolution to the conflict.

After being convicted on charges of threatening Iran's national security through his leadership in the establishment of Christian house churches, Pastor Saeed Abedini was sentenced to eight years in Iran's notorious Evin Prison. The anticipated trial, followed by the shocking sentence, took place in Tehran on January 21, 2013.
Upon hearing the formal charges, the 32-year-old Iranian-American pastor told the judge he had no involvement in politics or in undermining the government. He explained that after moving to the United States in 2005, he periodically returned to his country of origin to visit his family, as well as oversee the development of an orphanage he had begun years earlier. Prior to this, about a decade ago, Saeed was the founder of a growing house church movement which consisted of more than 2,000 members. However, at that time, house churches were not considered a threat in Iran.
"This trial apparently is focussed on 13 years ago, when Pastor Saeed converted from Islam to Christianity," said Jordan Sekulow, Executive Director of the American Centre for Law and Justice, who is representing Pastor Saeed's wife, Naghmeh, and their children. Although the U.S. does not have diplomatic relations with Iran, the State Department condemned the sentencing and called for Saeed's release. According to reports in Mohabat News, although the Iranian constitution recognizes religious minorities' rights, the regime prosecutes Christian converts from an Islamic background.
In the midst of her personal suffering, Naghmeh Abedini asks for continued prayer. She courageously reminds us that even though Saeed (who always had a heart for the imprisoned) has himself been bound through this persecution, the Word of God is being released.
May our Almighty God abundantly bless Pastor Saeed for his steadfast faith throughout the ordeal. In the name of Jesus, we ask for God's divine protection on our Christian brother during this unjust incarceration.
Pray that (in the words of Saeed) he continues to be a vessel in bringing God's Kingdom to a dark place by sharing the Gospel of peace and eternal life to the dying world.
We also pray that justice will ultimately be served and that, through the Lord's mighty intervention, Saeed will be safely returned to his wife and two young children.

INDIA: Tribal Christians Brutally BeatenSources: Release International, Morning Star News, Times of India
As a result of two recent attacks by Hindu extremists, more than 100 Christian villagers have been forced to flee from Tamsai (in Thane District of Maharashtra State) for "rejecting their tribal identity." Apparently, the Hindu nationalists involved in the attacks were angered that these converts to Christianity no longer practiced their traditional tribal religions. Equally alarming is the fact that about 20 police officers failed to intervene, but rather passively stood by, prompting concern of anti-Christian bias being represented by the police force.
The first brutal assault took place on December 30th when the believers did not participate in a festival celebrating a tribal deity. Many of these victims fled from their homes after being beaten with wooden clubs. More recently, a large mob of extremists physically assaulted a group of Christians who met to worship in a private home. Prior to these attacks, local Christians were receiving unfair treatment from their neighbours by being denied access to water, firewood and their monthly supply of grains at the local ration shop.
- Pray that God's perfect love will drive out all fear from the hearts of these suffering tribal Christians.
- Ask Him to bring healing and comfort to them, especially after experiencing brutal attacks of persecution.
- May those in authority uphold and properly defend the religious rights of all citizens in this area, serving as a catalyst of peace between the different faith groups.

On behalf of the Voice of the Martyrs I want to thank you for your prayers on behalf of all our persecuted brothers and sisters who are fellow believers in our Lord Jesus Christ . Please pray that there would be religious freedom in all these countries. That God may give the body of believers strength and courage to stand strong and courageous for Him, not by their own strength. That they may seek God’s council in all that they do surrendering to His ways We are thankful to our heavenly Father for the privilege of praying for them and that we may never become disheartened or numbed to the needs of the Persecuted Church world wide.

Believers at China's Shouwang Church remain steadfast

Shouwang Church in China
recently held its 45th outdoor worship service amidst the rain and snow while
praising God's faithfulness this year. Church leaders report that while two
believers were detained at a hotel and at least 18 more were taken from home or
from locations near the service, all have now been released.
It was three years ago, on
November 1, that the church held its first service outside in the cold and
snow. The government has been thwarting the efforts of the believers to rent a
venue for worship ever since
"God reminded us of
His grace through the rain and snow on this third anniversary of that
day," wrote church representatives in a letter of praise and appreciation.
"On that Sunday, God protected His church, and has been watching and
guarding His church in the following battle. Although we are always blind to
God's presence in this fierce battle because of our weakness, yet the Lord
keeps reminding us through various ways that He is near and is with us."
Please pray that this amazing witness and joy will reach the hearts of unbelievers throughout the region and nation, drawing many to Christ.
Please pray that the Shouwang Church will soon be provided with a safe indoor venue for their worship.
Pray that government officials will respect religious freedom in China.

Wow, I can't believe how long it has been since I did a Wednesday's Voice. It is actually pretty easy for me as all the work is done by Leroy's aunt and the Voice of the Martyrs. I keep meaning to post something and then something happens. This past week I was reminded of something about prayer.
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Colossians 1:9 NIV84
Paul prayed for the Colossians ceaslessly. He prayed for their growth in the Lord, as well as thanksgiving for them. This is what we should be doing everyday, praying for other believers. Not just those around us, but those globally. People we have only heard about. We may not know their exact needs or wants, but we pray to someone who knows all and who intercedes where we cannot.
We need to remember to lift other believers up consistently. For this reason I am going to bring back Wednesday's Voice and add something as well. I would ask that if you need any prayers or praise, that you would please enter them in the comment section on Wednesday. Restrictions on religious freedom struck down in India

The Himachal Pradesh High Court in India has struck down a law which made it compulsory for those seeking to convert from his or her religion to give a 30-day notice to the District Magistrate before conversion. The verdict in the landmark anti-conversion case challenged both the Himachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act of 2006 and Himachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Rules of 2007.
The Court also struck down rules making it mandatory for the state to inquire into every religious conversion. These rules did not provide sufficient safeguards outlining the time frame for such an inquiry or even who should conduct the inquiry. Unfortunately, many other provisions restricting religious freedom will stand.

Three vicious attacks against Christians in India in recent months reflect a growing anti-Christian sentiment.
A pastor and his children were attacked last February in Kerala state. Pastor Titus Ignatius Kapan and his family were eating dinner in the home of a convert to Christianity from Hinduism when Hindu extremists stormed in. They abused the pastor and his children and then dropped large boulders on the pastor's car.
Days earlier, Hindu extremists disrupted a prayer service in Pandhi village in Chhattisgarh state. For two days the attackers threatened and assaulted attendees with their fists and leather belts. They also tore down the believers' tent.
Finally, a group of Christians in Haibasa district in Jharkhand state were forced to leave their village after a series of attacks by local villagers. The Christians took refuge at a local church but at last report are living without necessities. In the last of the attacks, the violent mob shut down all exit points to the village before assaulting Christians with iron rods, axes, arrows and other sharp weapons, severely beating four Christians. Other believers, including children, were locked in a room where the assailants attempted to burn them alive. Thankfully police arrived before they could carry out the murders.

Please pray that Christians in India will find strength in Christ to bear the persecution and to continue to proclaim the Kingdom.
Please pray that God will soften the hearts of the persecutors and draw them to repentance.
Pray that our suffering brothers and sisters in India will trust God to enable them to proclaim the gospel even while suffering (2 Timothy 4:16-18).
The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying.

A young mother who angered relatives when she refused to deny her Christian faith has been falsely accused of blaspheming Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.

Shamim Bibi, the 26-year-old mother of a five-month-old baby girl, was arrested by police in Khichiwala, Bahawalnagar district, in Punjab Province on February 28 after neighbours accused her of uttering remarks against Muhammad -- an offence punishable by life imprisonment or death under Pakistan's blasphemy laws. Shamim's brother and brother-in-law say she was wrongly accused because she had resisted pressure from her husband's sister as well as her nephew and niece to convert to Islam just four days before her arrest.
A local leader claimed that Shamim's neighbours told him and other Muslims that they had heard the Christian woman making derogatory remarks about Muhammad in her courtyard. Shamim's brother-in-law says after gathering information from an accuser and the neighbourhood, he found that neither accuser was even present at the time of the alleged remark. The Superintendent of Police Investigation also acknowledged that one of the two witnesses had admitted to not being present at the alleged "crime" scene.
Please pray that the accusers will recant any untruth and that Shamim will be freed.
Please pray that her infant daughter and her husband, Bashir Masih, will remain safe and will soon be reunited with Shamim.
Pray that Shamim will keep her eyes on Jesus, persevere in her faith, and not grow weary or lose heart (Hebrews 10:32-39; Hebrews 12:1-3).

Islamists in Egypt use Rumours to Attack Christians

Tensions remain high in an Egyptian village where several thousand Muslims went on a rampage on February 12 over a false rumour that a church was holding a 14-year-old girl against her will in order to convert her back to Christianity. Sources said that between 2,000 and 5,000 hard-line Muslims, most of them from the Salafi movement, harassed Christian villagers in Meet Bahsar in the Nile Delta, attacked a church building to "save" the girl, damaged a priest's house and then destroyed his car. The girl was not in the church.
The girl's father, an ethnic Copt who converted to Islam, had stirred the crowd up on the mistaken notions that his daughter had converted to Islam and that Christians had kidnapped her. It was unclear if the girl's father was merely mistaken about her location or if he intentionally misled villagers.
The Salafi movement is made up of extremely conservative Muslims increasingly known for their hateful rhetoric and attacks against churches in Egypt. The Salafis have used rumours of kidnappings or relationships between Christians and Muslims to incite other attacks against Christians.

Four Christians killed in bomb attack in Jos, Nigeria

Four Christians died and over 50 more were injured after a car bomb exploded at the Church of Christ in Nigeria headquarters on February 26 in Jos, Plateau state. The Sunday morning worship service had just started when two suicide bombers detonated their explosives. One of the bombers was killed, while the other was later apprehended. The Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the attack, which sparked violent reprisals in which two Muslims were killed.
Boko Haram, which models itself on the Taliban, aims to impose radical Islamic law in Nigeria, including a more extreme form of Shariah in the north. To achieve this, observers believe the militants are attempting to destabilize relations between Christians and Muslims. The group has been stepping up attacks against the Christian minority in the north and has ordered Christians to leave. At the same time, the militants have been targeting Jos, the dividing line between the mainly Muslim north and the predominantly Christian south.

Man charged with blasphemy in Pakistan (Source VOM/USA)
Dildar Yousaf,
28, was arrested and charged with blasphemy after defending his eight-year-old
nephew who was being attacked by a group of Muslim boys last June. Dildar's
nephew, Ehtasham, was passing by a "madrassa," a school where Islamic
students study the Qur'an, when seven boys surrounded him and tried to force
him to say, "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet."
Ehtasham refused, and the boys began to verbally and physically assault him.
Dildar happened by and pulled his nephew away and took him home.
A rumour then
spread that Dildar had disgraced the Muslim proclamation of faith. Crowds
gathered and began to demand his death. Police picked up Dildar from his
workplace, put him in protective custody and charged him with blasphemy. This
particular charge carries a potential three-year sentence with the possibility
of parole, unlike other blasphemy charges in the country that can result in a
death sentence.
Dildar's wife,
Naseem, and their two children, as well as Ehtasham and his family, have all
had to leave their village. VOM is supporting the family and providing legal
assistance to Dildar. Dildar's village has a history of persecution. In the
past, a Christian's house was burned, a pastor was killed, and another believer
was charged with blasphemy.
Please pray that Dildar and Ehtasham's families will be able to safely return to their homes with God's protection.
Please pray that the charges against Dildar will be dropped.
Please pray that God will reach out to the seven young boys who attacked Ehtasham so that they will hear and heed His call.

Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani recently refused to state that the Muslim prophet Muhammad was a messenger sent by God despite the fact that it would have secured his release. On December 30, local authorities said they would release the pastor if he agreed to make the statement, but the pastor rejected the offer and remains in prison awaiting a final decision on his case. The request violates article 23 of the Iranian Constitution, which states that no one should be molested or taken to task simply for holding a certain belief.
The pastor at the Church of Iran was arrested in Rasht in 2009, and in September 2010, he was tried and found guilty of apostasy and sentenced to death He was made three similar offers in 2011 where recanting his faith would have saved his life, but he refused each time. His case was eventually referred to Iran's Supreme Leader. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the case may have been passed on to the head of the Iranian judiciary, delaying execution for up to a year to allow time to convince the pastor to renounce his faith.

Somali convert from Islam was paraded before a cheering crowd recently and
publicly flogged as a punishment for embracing a "foreign religion."
Sofia Osman, a 28-year-old Christian from Janale city in Somalia's Lower
Shabelle region, had been taken into custody by al Shabaab militants in
November.
The public whipping was meant to mark her release. She received 40 lashes on
December 22 while jeered by spectators. "Sofia was whipped 40 lashes ...
but she didn't tell what other humiliations she had suffered while in the hands
of the militants," an eyewitness said, adding that the whipping left her
bleeding. "I saw her faint. I thought she had died, but soon she regained
consciousness and her family took her away." The whipping was administered
in front of hundreds of spectators after Sofia was released from her month-long
custody in al Shabaab camps.
In
the days after the punishment while Sofia was nursing her injuries at her
family's home, she would not talk to anyone and looked dazed, a source close in
touch with the family said. "Please pray for her quick recovery," the
source added.
Pray the Lord will completely heal Sofia of all physical and emotional injuries.Ask the Lord to protect her from further harm.Pray that she will rest in the knowledge that the Good Shepherd walks with her through this difficult time (Psalm 23).Pray her faithful testimony will be used as a witness for the gospel. Christians warned by Muslim militants to leave Nigeria's
north within days

On January 1, the
militant Islamic group Boko Haram issued an ultimatum giving Christians living
in northern Nigeria three days to leave the area amid a rising tide of
violence. Boko Haram spokesman, Abul Qaqa, also said that fighters were ready
to confront soldiers sent to the area under a state of emergency declared in
parts of four states by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
Vowing to render
Nigeria "ungovernable," Boko Haram targets anything that does not
support its fundamentalist Islamist ends and jihadist means: universities,
police, secular courts, Christian churches and even liberal mosques.
The state of
emergency came after a string of attacks in late December, where churches, a
state security building, and a mosque were bombed. By December 31, President
Jonathan had closed Nigeria's borders with Chad and Niger Republic and declared
the state of emergency in 15 hard-hit local government areas of Borno, Yobe,
Plateau and Niger states, sending tanks and soldiers to patrol the streets.

Buddhists oust believers from their homes in Nepal

Buddhists
in Nepal drove a pastor and other believers from their village, accusing the
pastor of bringing a foreign religion to the village and promoting teachings
against society. The oppressors accused Christians in the village of using
bribery and coercion to covert local residents to Christianity. It is also
believed a six-year-old girl was sexually abused by one of the individuals who
incited the expulsion. A VOM worker has helped the victims resettle in another
village and also prayed with the family of the girl who was abused.
Pray that the passion these believers have
for Christ will be the light that draws others to Jesus (Matthew 5:14-16).
Pray for healing for the girl who was abused.
Please pray that hostility against Christians
in Nepal will cease and that believers will be allowed to live and worship
freely.

Officials Frantically Deny Spread of the Gospel
The Iranian media
is desperate to refute claims that Christianity is spreading among Iranian
youth and through cities considered to be almost exclusively Islamic. The
government-supported Jomhouri-e-Eslami daily newspaper is calling the spread of
Christianity an unfounded rumour, but there are definite contradictions in fact
to this statement. On October 2, the government-supported news website,
Javan-Online, acknowledged that the acceptance of Christianity was becoming a
trend and reported 200 house churches were discovered in just a few months in
the traditionally Islamic city of Mashhad.
Moslehi also cryptically announced there will
be a new effort to fight the growth of house churches in Iran, and there are
serious concerns that this Christmas season could bring intense persecution for
Christians. Last Christmas season, authorities from the Ministry of
Intelligence raided house churches and the homes of believers in Iran arresting
hundreds of Christian.
Pray the Body of Christ will continue to multiply and mature despite
persecution.
Pray
the government will be open to change and allow full rights and protection for
non-Muslims.
Pray
that those who flee Iran will find refuge and help.

Christian killed over land dispute in Pakistan

Safdar Masih, a Pakistani Christian, was shot to death on October 5 over a land dispute. When Safdar's church in Mian Channu, Khanewal District, purchased land to build an orphanage, their claim on the land was contested by an influential feudal lord. On October 3, church members filed a complaint with police but were pressured to withdraw their petition. Two days later, armed men attacked the village, murdering Safdar and injuring a dozen others, including children. The men also seized the land. The police have yet to file a report about the attack.
Pray the Lord will comfort Safdar's family and friends. Ask God to heal and restore those who were injured.
Ask the Lord to protect and provide for the orphaned children.
Pray the Lord will bring about justice in an unjust world (Psalm 140).
