Caffeinated Randomness - Cake

Our Caffeinated Chieftain's and my RL book club is currently reading Eating Cake. I finally finished it today. Besides being a great quick, feel good read, it has recipes. How can you say no to that? I may even try one out soon.

The writer and I agree on cakes.
Cakes have gotten a bad rap. People equate virtue with turning down dessert. There is always one person at the table who holds up her hand when I serve the cake. No, really, I couldn't, she says, and then gives her flat stomach a conspiratorial little pat. Everyone who is pressing a fork into that first tender layer looks at the person who declined the plate, and they all think, That person is better than I am. That person has discipline. But that isn't a person with discipline, that is a person who has completely lost touch with joy. A slice of cake never made anybody fat. You don't eat the whole cake. You don't eat a cake everyday of your life. You take the cake when it is offered because the cake is delicious. You have a slice of cake and what it reminds you of is someplace that's safe, uncomplicated, without stress. A cake is a party, a birthday, a wedding. A cake is what's served on the happiest days of your life. Ray, Jeanne eat cake. New York: New American Library, 2003.
Personally, I have met very few cakes I didn't like. Fruit cake and I don't mingle, nor does any cake with coconut. Today I was inspired to make a Tomato Soup Cake. Don't laugh or cringe. It was so yummy. Imagine a lightly spiced cake with raisins, covered with a creamy Cream Cheese Icing. Sam enjoyed the cake so much that he ate 1/2 of mommies piece. That just gives me a reason to have more later.

I was privileged to make a cake for our Caffeinated Chieftain for her birthday at our Bible Babes group. I made a lovely pink and white almond flavoured marble cake with almond flavoured butter cream icing, which I dyed pink in her honour. For anyone who wants the recipe go to my sister blog Cooking with the Evil Twins, I posted the recipe there.

So go eat cake and post your Caffeinated Randomness.

Wednesday's Voice - Vietnam

Christian forced to recant faith in Vietnam

A Christian couple from Ho Co village, Vietnam -- Sung Cua Po and Hang thi Va -- has endured physical abuse and threats since Sung converted to Christianity in November 2009. On December 1, the couple was arrested and beaten by officials after police earlier incited locals to abuse and stone them and other Christian families. Officials reportedly struck Sung 70 times on his head and back. Afterwards, the believers were fined 8 million dong (approximately $450 CAD) and a pig weighing at least 16 kilos. Sung's cell phone and motorbike were also confiscated.

On December 15, police took the couple to members of their extended family who severely pressured them to deny their Christian faith. When police threatened to beat Sung to death and seize his property, which would leave his family destitute, he signed recantation documents. He has since been subjected to further pressure from authorities, his family and clan members. Sung is scheduled to prove his reconversion on February 13 by offering sacrifices to ancestors. Ask God to equip Sung by His Holy Spirit to remain strong in his faith despite severe pressure and threats.

Pray for protection for Sung, Hang and their children, as well as the other Christian families in their community.

Pray that Vietnam will respect religious freedom for all its citizens.

Just Something I Whipped Up Monday

The Girl Creative

I know that this blog is not a crafting blog, but I have been following The Girl Creative for a few months and have been inspired to make inexpensive crafts for my home. Every Monday they have a meme for a quick and easy craft. I finally did one that I thought I would share with you.

My daughter has a lot of pictures from friends that have been literally floating around the house. I decided I needed to make her a memo board for her room. I found an old frame at a thrift store near our home and was immediately inspired. I knew I had some cork board at home and ribbon and stickers.

The first thing I did was get rid of the bears in the frame and pulled out the backing. I measured the backing to the cork and cut out an appropriate sized sheet.

I then measured and cut the ribbon to cross the cork and glued it on the cork board.

I placed glue on the edge of the frame to attach the cork board to it.

I had some sticker paper for scrap booking. I used my large round punch to punch out circles and randomly placed them on the frame.

FINISHED PRODUCT!

I know it is not perfect but she loves it and the photos are no longer floating around the house. I paid a total of $2.00 for the frame. The ribbon and sticker paper were purchased many years ago and in crafting storage.

My only problem now is that she wants to know what I'm doing with the bears from the frame. Any ideas?
